2009 NFL Predictions

September 8, 2009 at 1:57 pm (Sports thoughts, Uncategorized)

In the world of blogging, much like in the world of economics, supply and demand is an undeniable principle. Production of an unwanted product is, in the simplest of terms, worthless. Therefore the next few weeks will feature a few miscellaneous blog posts of varying subject matter to see if there is any more demand for Daniel’s Den to stay open.

2009 San Diego Padres: The Prediction of Hope

March 30, 2009 at 9:57 am (Sports thoughts)

The San Diego Padres organization has always been adept at marketing their product with catchy phrases. Probably the most memorable of all was the phrase, “Keep the faith”. I think (but I’m not sure) that was the title phrase of the NL pennant winning 1998 team.

Since then there have been slogans like, “experience it” and “play downtown” and “on a mission”. But none of these slogans have resonated the way that “keep the faith” works. Still to this day you occasionally hear the chant making it’s way through the stands.

Keep-The-Faith!

Keep-The-Faith!

Keep-The-Faith!

But sometimes keeping the faith is so unbelievably difficult we can’t rally ourselves around it. Sometimes “Yes we can” is the last thing we believe. Especially when all the experts are telling us “no you can’t”.

It’s times like these, times when faith is wavering, that we need hope.

We’ve gotta hold on to what we got.

It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not.

We’ve got each other and that’s a lot- for love.

We’ll give it a shot!

That’s hope.

And that is how I write this year’s Padres Prediction Post. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Playoff Predictions

December 31, 2008 at 10:07 am (Sports thoughts, Uncategorized)

It’s the classic situation where you might find yourself saying, “Stranger things have happened.”  And yet as I sit here today the fact of the matter is that as far as NFL playoffs are concerned nothing stranger has ever happened.

The Chargers have been everywhere this season; I mean that in terms of both their play and their travel. They have been on a strange path to say the least, becoming just the first team ever to make the playoffs from a 4-8 record. Becoming the first team ever to overcome a 3 game deficit with 3 games to play. Becoming the first team ever to make the playoffs while a team with 3 more wins than they have stays home (hehehe).

And now the pre-season darling to win it all is right there in contention to, well, win it all.

But will they? I know the answer to that question and so much more in my magical look into the future… Read the rest of this entry »

Padres Cold-Hearted Stove

November 11, 2008 at 10:15 am (Sports thoughts)

As my loyal readers know I have been the most staunch Padres apologist over the years. I always see the glass as half full. I always anticipate things will turn around. I always believe the Padres are committed to and are going to win the world series. And while last season was an abysmal display of Padres baseball from the top down I was convinced that the mistakes were minor enough that the core of this team could quickly rebound and contend. Football Predictions Based on a Flux Capacitor

August 27, 2008 at 1:36 pm (Sports thoughts)

Last night my friend Jeff (AKA “Big Red” AKA “Red Man” AKA “Jeffy”) asked me when i was going to put up my NFL predictions for 2008.

The funny thing was that I hadn’t even considered such a post. I was totally satisfied with my little fantasy thread taking shape.

But I told him that I would “get right on it”, so that’s what I am doing.

Here you go Jeff… Read the rest of this entry »

Unicorns are cool but I’d rather have a nice Tight End

August 25, 2008 at 8:43 am (Sports thoughts)

One of the interesting things I’ve noticed about being married is how little comedic material I have. When you’re by yourself you can tell the same joke or story to multiple different groups of people while continually getting similar or hopefully better responses. I never even realized I was doing this until my wife came along and stood next to me in nearly every conversation I have. This is not really a bad thing however because she really inspires me to fine tune my shtick. Another positive is that I get to be that silent critic each time she goes after chuckles of her own. This is really enjoyable. I absolutley love hearing my wife tell anecdotes I already know. It fascinates me to compare her current effort to her previous ones and to just wait on the timing and facial expressions I know are coming. Sometimes the anticipation gets the better of me and I begin to laugh prematurely just in expectation of how delightful this story will be.

While I would love to tell some of her stories here I fear the ramifications would be horrendous since my lovely bride is also a casual reader (but only for the sake of keeping track of me). If I were to tell you some of her stories I would then handicap her ability to tell them and would thus forfeit a tremendous amount of joy in both our lives.

Nevertheless for the purpose of this blog entry I must tell of just one of her timely lines (I apologize dear). Read the rest of this entry »

The Last Fan Standing

May 6, 2008 at 10:42 am (Sports thoughts)

April is my favorite time of the month. It marks the end of college basketball and the beginning of Baseball. The latter happens to be my favorite of all hobbies. I love baseball, specifically the play of my hometown team, the San Diego Padres. Every single year on my birthday (which frequently falls on opening day) I anticipate a year of triumphs, excitement and ultimately a season-ending championship. Read the rest of this entry »

22 things I learned from 22 innings of baseball.

April 18, 2008 at 10:33 am (Sports thoughts)

Last night my wife and I went to the Padres vs. Rockies. This morning we got home. Here is some knowledge I picked up along the way…

22. Tony Clark may be a good pinch hitter but now we know why he’s not a starter. (1 for 8 with 4 k’s) Read the rest of this entry »

The 2008 Padres Prediction Post

February 29, 2008 at 10:17 am (Sports thoughts, Uncategorized)

While the 2007 Padres Prediction Post was remarkably accurate in it’s final result (predicted number of wins 90, actual number of wins 89) I have decided to attempt a different strategy in calculating the Padres regular season record for 2008.

Last year my strategy was to compare the 2007 Padres to the 2006 Padres are see where the improvements and regressions might be. This year, rather than comparing the Padres of now to the Padres of then I am going to be comparing the Padres of now to the other teams in the division on a position by position basis. Chargers Stuff

February 25, 2008 at 10:16 am (Sports thoughts)

In Baseball the “hot stove” is that which sustains us through the long cold winter by giving us something to smell, imagine and make our mouths water in expectation of the upcoming season.

Football isn’t the same for a couple of reasons. First of all the wait for football is eased by the 5 months of baseball during it’s interlude. Secondly as far a player acquisitions go, in baseball a single move can transform the entire outlook for a team, no such moves take place in football. This could be because of the roster size or because of the perception of parity but for whatever reason we acknowledge off-season football moves just are not as significant as off-season baseball moves.

But they exist and maybe they are interesting to you and you’d like to sound off about them.

So I provide for loyal readers a post where they may peruse the player movements of the San Diego Chargers… Read the rest of this entry »
