Sensational Basin Picks

January 30, 2008 at 7:46 am (Random thoughts, Sports thoughts)

I was feeling a bit nostalgic yesterday so I went back and reviewed a classic post from last year. Sooper Bole Picks

Indeed that was one of my most diverse group of commenter’s and it opened the door to a strange progression of posts. What began as a discussion about who would win the super bowl led to a discussion about sabbath observance, then a discussion about alcohol and then somehow a long debate over parenting.

Weird.

Well I have no idea where this current game will lead us but let me once again issue the challenge for my readers to predict the outcome of “The Big Game”

Last year’s winner, miss Juarez, won a lotto scratcher but then wasted it by using her keys to scratch instead of a lucky penny.

This year’s winner however will get the option, they can either choose a lotto scratcher OR a free Chipotle burrito.

Also there was some debate last year as to why she won and not someone else who had the same point differential. Thus I give you a list of rules…

Rule #1 I have the final decision and will declare the winner based upon my assessment of the most accurate score prediction. Therefore I will disqualify anyone who makes more than one prediction or who owns any type of New England associated paraphernalia.

I guess that’s about all the rules I can think of for now. However I do reserve the right to make up rules as I go along.

Buwhahahahaha!

I consider myself reasonably intelligent

January 25, 2008 at 10:43 am (Random thoughts)

It’s true

At times I have been accused of thinking too highly of myself. Indeed I think I have thought too highly of myself.

However an honest evaluation of my own intellect by comparison basis leads me to the conclusion that I am “reasonably intelligent”.

I have a decent enough understanding about a decent enough number of subjects that I can make “intelligent conversation” with a decent enough majority of any given general population.

Basically I know enough to say that I don’t know enough and that there is much more out there for me to learn and understand.

The point of this post however isn’t to brag about my perception of my own level of intelligence,  but rather quite the opposite. The point of this post is to make known the things I am certain I don’t know.

This post is dedicated to things I have tried  to understand but have yet to “get”. Read the rest of this entry »

2008 Elections. What I care about.

January 18, 2008 at 10:24 am (Politics thoughts)

With Super Tuesday looming on the horizon and the subsequent political events that will only snowball from there I think it’s about time for me to put out a nice juicy political post.

Politicians are panderers. If you haven’t discovered that yet you probably haven’t been around too long. I freely admit I haven’t been around too long, in fact the November elections will be just my third time voting for President of the United States.

In 1996 San Diego hosted the Republican national convention. I remember because I got a cool T-Shirt out of it. I also remember as a 16 year old actually taking an interest in politics for the first time. All that I knew then was that Bill Clinton was bad and that I should do all that I could to make sure he wasn’t elected president. Being 16 I couldn’t vote so instead I put a bumper sticker on my car that said “Dole*Kemp”.

They lost.

4 years later however a new face came onto the scene. The son of a former president, the former governor of the second most populated state and  a former owner of a professional baseball team. All these terrific qualities under one ten-gallon hat calling himself a “Christian” and I was hooked.

I say that to make it clear that even then, as a 20 year old, I had no idea what I actually cared about in electing my leader.

Now I do. And I have categorized what I care about in a convenient, easy to use top 8 list.  Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego @ New England AFC Championship Game Preview

January 15, 2008 at 11:12 am (Sports thoughts)

It’s only Tuesday and yet these type of articles are already finding their way out of New England (Thanks albino, Former champ and all).

I expect there to be a lot of talk about how great the Patriots are. No other team has ever been able to do what they have done over the course of an entire season. However what I cannot understand is all the talk about how bad the Chargers are, or rather how poorly they match up with the Patriots.

I’ve had some success on this blog using my own non-professional, subjective, coach-potato skillz in predicting outcomes (I predicted 90 Padres wins, they had 89. I’m 14 and 4 on my pre-season Chargers predictions and 7 of 8 on NFL playoff predictions). I don’t just throw darts at a board in coming up with these, instead I do three things in approaching the selection of winners. Read the rest of this entry »

Fun Stuff for San Diegans

January 10, 2008 at 10:03 am (Random thoughts, Uncategorized)

It feels like forever since I’ve written a blog.

(but it’s not like my lack of entries have diminished my blogging activities because Alex provokes me like an Iranian speed boat)

anyway I read a nifty little story in the UT this morning that provided a worthwhile link and subsequent commentary.

Here is the story… San Diego named on the “It list”

And here is the commentary… Read the rest of this entry »
